Throwback Thursday: 90's Hip-Hop Videos (backpack edition)

Note: Backpack was a term made popular by The Source magazine to discredit independent hip-hop as they received their ad revenue from major labels peddling 'gangster' music. That is a fact because I just wrote it down.

Right , some Uk ish for ya,

For those not in the know, UK Hip Hop is pretty much dead and buried, regardless of what the worldwide scene might or might not be saying. The Uk Scene has just never really got it's shit together. England's one glimmer of hope seems to be the (relatively) young 'Grime' scene, you can read all about it here:

So for all the UK Fan Dem we will be dropping regular grime updates, news and mixtapes right here on AINTHARDTOTELL

Now to the post:

The Last Word on Rick "photoshop" Ross

r91

Excerpt taken from interview with the real Freeway Ricky Ross via AllHipHop

After seeing all the stuff that has been going on with the Correctional Officer (William Roberts) that stole my name, [it] makes me think back to a year and a half ago when we spoke,” Ross explained to AllHipHop.com. “I tried to talk to him like a big brother and let him know to be you, and that he couldn’t be me. And that if he wanted to rap the lifestyle that he couldn’t frame it based on my life.”

“How different his life would have been if he would have taken my advice,” Ross reflected. “You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can’t fool all the people all the time"

Throwback Thursday: Marley Marl in Control Vol I & II

If your thinking why would I want to listen to this old ish, heres a few reasons. To hear where Eminem stole his flow from (Masta Ace), Fab's inspiration (Big Daddy Kane), every Mc's favourite Mc (Kool G Rap) and the pioneer of chopping drums (Marley Marl) that created a new sound taken forward by Large Pro, Pete Rock, Havoc and many more.

Also, go here for an excellent review of Nas album on SlamOnline

Tying in album promotion with something real and worthwhile, rather than talking 'tough' about the next man can only be applauded. Fox' response will not be printed here, although rest assured it reaffirmed their arrogance and dismissal for anyone outside of their little foxhole.

RICK ROSS IS A BIG FAT LIE!!! BEFORE BEING A GANGSTER RAPPER HE WAS AN OFFICER! LOL TRUE STORIES

Ok i saw this a lil while ago and slept on it cos basically i actually thought the fat fuck was telling the truth when he denied the accusations. However it turns out that Rick Ross the BOSSSss was in fact a correctional facility officer in his past life.
After he sat there and denied it many times eventually documents were released that uncovered the truth to prove hart that The Boss was a prison guard in a South florida correctinal facility for over a year.

the self proclaimed tittay gravy man real name william l Roberts was a guard from December 1995 for 18 months at a salary of $22,913.54. According attached personnel record, which was provided to TSG by Jo Ellyn
Rackleff, a DoC spokesperson. The rapper’s
social security number is identical to that of the jail guard.
According to the official document, Ross was earning $25,794.34.
It just makes me laugh how these guys go on, specially the boss going on about trafficing cocaine and being the boss, turns out this guy was stacking paper from being a officer. rappers are full of shit these days.

DMX: I'm slippin, I'm fallin', I can't get up

10 years ago DMX made history becoming the first person to have two no.1 albums released within a year. Recent times have not been so successful for the dog. Below is the debut album that caused Lyor Cohen to proclaim DMX the saviour of Def Jam and saw the beginning of a then 17 old year old Swizz Beatz career.

Funkmaster Flex - The 90's King

For the period of the mid to late nineties Funk Flex was holding down the city. The Tunnel nightclub inspired many great records and broke plenty also, from 'Broken Language' to 'Kick in the Door'. People thought nothing about paying up to $150 to party on a Sunday night.

"Sunday nights outside Tunnel, the line around the block is so long you’d think Puff Daddy was inside, handing out the Benjamins, baby; but all those kids in the Polo and Hilfiger are really waiting to see the guy who helped make Puffy a star. ”Go Flex, go Flex!"

The Art of Sampling

Ever wondered why Just Blaze' beats sounded so banging on his contributions to the Roc and the Dipset. Well because he would sample parts of a record with the drums aswell, then turn his own drums up to drown the unwanted drums out.

Listen/Download original sample for "I really mean it" Diplomats

Listen/Download original sample for "Breathe" Fabolous

Anyway, if you would like to know how Harold Melvin helped Kanye become a superstar and why Three 6 Mafia pretty much owe their whole career to Willie Hutch. Check out The Soul Sample for a rundown of the original records sampled with download links.

Album Reviews: Nas - Untitled (Who gives a f**k)

Like movie reviews, album reviews are the opinion of 1 person/corporation that actually hold no weight whatsoever. They are of no use at all.

When it comes to hip-hop album reviews in particular, it seems 'journalists' enjoy the freedom provided by a noticeable drop in the degree of fact checking. Creating lazy articles and allowing their personal prejudice towards an artist or genre shine through with sweeping statements and dismissive remarks.

Again this was confirmed when reading the absurd reviews of Nas' new 'Untitled' album. Heres a few low lights (click on source to read full review if you must)

Pitchfork: But now, how is Nas going to come off like he intended Untitled to be an unflinching look at race relations and yet somehow leave off the track he did with stic.man? Rating: 3.8

Okay, first of all, stic.man produced 2 tracks on the album so they already f****d up there. Just a hint of the lack of knowledge displayed throughout the article. (They also gave the new Three 6 Mafia album a rating of 6.8)

NyTimes: Nas is the least musical of the great rappers, with little sense of melody and little flexibility in rhythm and cadence.

This is just complete bullshit beyond belief.

LaTimes: "Untitled," due out Tuesday, is Nas' blatant attempt to lob a Molotov cocktail at both the chattering classes and the streets in an attempt to simultaneously reclaim his spot as one of rap's finest and shift a million units.

Again, completely misunderstanding the artist and what he's about. Reclaim? Lol. Any 1 verse from Nas can be better than the entire career of most rappers. After 17 years in music you think now he gives a sh*t about selling a million records!

Nas Interview with Mc Serch

Whats the big deal you say, the host of those terrible vh1 rap shows speaking to Nas. Well back in 92'/93', before Serch was giving advice to the worlds worst rappers he started Searchlite publishing and got Nas his deal at Columbia. He then went on to executive produce the above album. With that in mind the interview may well be worth a listen as they discuss past and present issues on the day 'Untitled' gets a release.

Wise Words from a Wise Man (Obama name checks Weezy)

Quoted from a town hall meeting on Tuesday night in Georgia.

“You are probably not that good a rapper. Maybe you are the next Lil Wayne, but probably not, in which case you need to stay in school.”

Obama also had a message for all the wanna-be Kobe Bryants out there, saying “I know you think you are, but you’re not. You are over-rated in your own mind. You will not play in the NBA.”

That being said, keep your dreams alive kids!

For Baracks thoughts on hip-hop and music in general you can check the full interview from Rolling Stone, which just posted today.

Video: Nas - Hero + New Skyzoo tracks

If you wondered about why the original title got dropped, heres the 3rd verse.

This universal apartheid
I'm hog-tied, the corporate side
Blocking y'all from going to stores and buying it
First L.A. and Doug Morris was riding wit it
But Newsweek article startled big wigs
They said, Nas, why is he trying it?
My lawyers only see the Billboard charts as winning
Forgetting - Nas the only true rebel since the beginning
Still in musical prison, in jail for the flow
Try telling Bob Dylan, Bruce, or Billy Joel
They can't sing what's in their soul
So untitled it is
I never change nothin'
But people remember this
If Nas can't say it, think about these talented kids
With new ideas being told what they can and can't spit
I can't sit and watch it
So, sh!t, I'ma drop it
Like it or not
You ain't gotta cop it
I'm a hustler in the studio
Cups of Don Julio
No matter what the CD called
I'm unbeatable, y'all

RZA interview: Cliques, Flicks & Politricks

Heres an excerpt talking about the problems with Wu-Tang, bi vs friends.

You asked about Wu-Tang, that’s the problem with it. There’s third energy, that’s sparking our own energy and making us look at somebody gotta be wrong here, somebody gotta be wrong. Maybe it’s Brother Divine, somebody gotta be doing something wrong here. Nobody is doing something wrong, this industry has been like this since the 60s, homey. It’s very rare that a black artist even makes it 10 years in this business. It’s very rare that hip hop artists make it this far. That we could still be worth money in the first place. And you can ask anybody. I’ve talked to niggas from before, I’ve talked to Redman and De La and all them niggas, when I was talking to them in the early days of hip hop and shit. I talked to everybody, man. I asked them how much they be getting. We was getting top dollar compared to what some of these niggas was getting.
Inspectah Deck got his first album, Redman never got nothing for his albums, as far as dollar advances and shit like that. To realize that we had that kind of advance, and we already selling 50,000 records. You can write that off, it’s not coming back. If I give you a million and you only get a dime a record after deduction and everything, all that shit, from that dollar, you sell 50,000, you gonna owe me. That’s the system.

Go over to nodfactor for the rest.

Videos on my radar, plus some news that was a long time coming

Lets start with this kid Asher Roth, I wondered if the suburbs would ever get a look in. I Mean of the millions of kids not born in the hood who love hip-hop at least one of them must be able to rap right? At least this video and track are pretty amusing. You can go to his website to download the full DJ Drama mixtape 'The Greenhouse Effect'.

Asher Roth - The Roth Boys (Roc Boys Inst.)

Another kid featured before on this blog is Charles Hamilton. I like him for the fact that his freestyles are just that. Not pre written verses over someone elses beat which is what usually counts for a freestyle. Heres the latest offering from Green Lanterns show on Sirius, catch part 2 here.

Charles Hamilton freestyle on Invasion radio (part 1)

Finally heres an interview with Maino discussing an 'interesting' incident that went down before hot97 summerjam. Maino is a guy who's music I been checking for a while, he comes across as someone who doesn't bullshit unnecessarily and has the true life experience of what he's rapping about. I won't offer his latest single because it may not be to your taste. Click here for a link to his latest mixtape 'The Last Real N***A Alive'. If all goes well his first album should be out on Atlantic shortly.

Bonus: Maino advises Cipha Sounds how to survive in jail, some funny sh*t. Listen here

Finally, NAS ETHERS CURTIS. AT LAST. One verse but that will do, Nasir got better things to rap about than waste energy on Curtis.

Ayo Queens get the money
nigga still screamin "Paper Chasin'"
[...]
niggas is still hatin
talkin that nas done fell off with rhyming
he'd rather floss with diamonds
they pray "please god let him spit that 'oozie in the army lining'
that 'shorty doo-wop rolling oowops in the park reclining' "
take twenty-seven mc's put em in a line and they out of alignment
my assignment said she said retirement hiding behind 8 Mile and The Chronic
get rich but dies rhyming
this is high science
now add 23 more from queens to b'more
i'm over they heads like a bulimic on a seesaw
now thats 50 porch monkeys ate up at the same time
